The hardest lesson I ever learned was the need to pay IRS back taxes. The Internal Revenue Service, or IRS, has certain powers granted to it by the Internal Revenue Code that allow the IRS to levy wages, bank accounts, social security payments, accounts receivables, insurance proceeds, real property and, even in some cases, a personal residence.

I vaguely knew that they had this power, but when I received their notice in compliance with the United States Constitution (the IRS needs to notify the taxpayer of the coming levy and give them an opportunity to be heard, after all), I was rudely awakened.

With some tax lawyer help, I learned more about the processes of the IRS, like how they need to go to a court and seek the permission of a federal magistrate to levy a house where the taxpayer lives, and that the first federal income tax was adopted as part of the Revenue Act of 1861.

Between all the fun facts and trivia, my Irs lawyer did help me learn how to pay IRS back taxes on time, which kept me from losing my house. Now, as I look back, I can say that I feel relieved. I feel happy. I feel, oddly, American, since before 1776, the American Colonies were subjet to taxation by the United Kingdom, which led them to rebel in the first place.
